About Gold Leaf Institute

Gold LEAF - which is an acronym for Lifelong Education At Farmington - is a member-run organization devoted to lifelong learning in the Franklin County, Maine area, for anyone age 50 or older (and spouse/partner, regardless of age). Gold LEAF Institute is one of 17 senior colleges in the state of Maine that offers:

  • Courses that require no educational pre-qualifications; Learning without stress, tests or credits
  • Intellectually stimulating classes and activities reflecting the interests of its members
  • Socializing with people with a similar interest in enhancing their knowledge of the world around them
  • Affiliation with Road Scholar (formerly called Elderhostel)
  • Affiliation with the University of Maine at Farmington and its facilities.​​​

Gold LEAF is a dynamic organization. Our programs and classes are flexible and intriguing; you can be creative with us.  Our leaders and active members are highly motivated people who like to relax, be involved, and have fun. We enjoy the learning environment of the campus, and the campus likes us because we are a vital link to the local community.

Mission Statement:
Our GLI Educational Mission Statement is as follows: GLI courses will be academically sound and intellectually stimulating, taught or facilitated most often by GLI members who are eager to share their interests, talents and skills with their peers. All courses will be short-term and self-contained, requiring no former knowledge of the subject, no tests, credits or other causes for anxiety – just personal enrichments and maintenance of mental vitality for the participants.
Accommodations:
The Gold LEAF Institute Senior College at the University of Maine at Farmington complies with all laws which define the rights of individuals with disabilities and makes reasonable efforts to accommodate specific needs related to Senior College programs. If you have specific disability needs, please let the Senior College office know about them in a timely fashion, for lead time is required to determine possible accommodations.

Gold LEAF Membership and Fees Information:
  • A person must be a senior college member to participate in activities and courses, and pay a small course fee, if applicable.
  • Membership Dues are $12 for each term:  Summer (July - September), Fall/Winter (October - February) and Spring (March - June). 
  • Fees for each course will vary according to length.
  • Field trip costs may be based on the expenses to Gold LEAF for the event.
  • Members of Gold LEAF are eligible to take classes at any of the 17 Maine Senior Colleges without paying additional membership dues; just pay the applicable course fees.
  • To become a member and register for courses, click here. Credit cards are preferred, but if you must write a check, download the registration form.

Gold LEAF Registration Information:
  • All registrations are made on a first-come, first-served basis when payment is included.
  • Registrations are taken online, by mail or in person at the GLI office. 
  • You will receive a course and registration confirmation.
  • You may withdraw from a course up to 7 days prior to the course by contacting the office. Your refund will have $2.00 subtracted to cover processing charges. ​A full refund to your credit card will be made for courses cancelled by GLI.
