Gold LEAF Institute Fees and Policies

Last Update: 1/15/2026
Membership
Membership in GLI or another Maine Senior College is required for registration in any Gold LEAF program offering, with the exception of guests of members.

GLI membership dues are $15 for each term: Summer (June – October), Fall/Winter (October – February), and Spring (February – June).  A full-year membership is available for $40, payable during the Summer term registration period.  Membership dues are waived for members 90 years of age and older.

Each current full-year member will be entitled to bring a guest to one class session per year at no charge.  A member may bring a guest to an additional one-class session per guest per year, with payment of the fee for that one session. Members seeking to bring a guest shall contact the Office Manager to register the guest for the session.

Course Fees
Presenters for Gold LEAF Institute are not paid. As a token of GLI's appreciation, a presenter is entitled to one free GLI class of their choice during any term. Course fees are collected to help cover the operating costs of Gold LEAF Institute.

Course fees are based on the number of sessions. The fee for a one-session course/activity is $8.

There will be a charge of $2 for each additional session (e.g., two sessions = $10, three sessions = $12).
Fees for outdoor activities with multiple sessions are capped at $14, and all other course/activity fees are capped at $20.  Trip fees always include the $8 base fee, but may include the cost of any admission charge.  Some courses may include an additional fee for materials.
If a course is open to the public, but sponsored by GLI (e.g., library technical help), the course will be offered free of charge.

Gold LEAF will offer at least one free course each term.

Scholarship
Assistance is available and can be requested by contacting the Gold LEAF office.

Registration
The GLI program year consists of three terms: Summer (July-October), Fall/Winter (October-February), and Spring (February-June). All registrations are made on a first-come, first-served basis when payment is included. Registrations are taken online, by mail, by phone, at the Gold LEAF office by appointment, or at the open house/kickoff event.

Members will receive an email confirmation of course registration. (Non-email members will receive confirmation via USPS.)

All members must agree to and sign a Release and Assumption of Risk form before participating in any Gold LEAF activity.

Cancellations / Postponements
Some classes have snow or storm dates, which are used if inclement weather forecasts affect program events. In the event of a class cancellation or postponement, members who are registered will receive notification via email.  (Non-email members will receive notification via phone call.)

Refunds / Credits
If a course is canceled by GLI, the registrant will receive a credit toward another course.  If a registrant requests a refund, a full refund will be made.  Registrants may withdraw from a course by contacting the office before the course starts and receive credit for another course.  If the registrant requests a refund, the refund will have $3 subtracted to cover processing charges.

Pets
Due to safety and liability issues, no pets are allowed at GLI events. Exceptions may be made for service animals, upon request.

Privacy
Member email addresses will be added to the weekly "Gold LEAF Extra." These messages usually include information about events happening within Gold LEAF, at UMF, in the community, and at other senior colleges. Member addresses will not be visible to other addressees in the message.  Members have the option to be removed from the distribution list.  Gold LEAF will not share member email addresses with anyone other than the Gold LEAF board members, presenters, and class hosts.

Prior to any class, trip, or activity, the coordinator shall announce that if anyone does not want to appear in any photos that will be taken and possibly posted or printed, they should speak with the class coordinator before the activity begins. The class coordinator will then announce it to the group, and all those with cameras will be asked to comply.

Transportation
Gold LEAF encourages carpooling and sharing fuel costs for trips and activities off campus.

Administrative
The LOGO, as seen on the Gold Leaf Institute home page, is our official symbol. No individual or organization may use the Gold LEAF name or logo without permission from the Executive Board.

Formal presentations to the GLI membership outside of scheduled courses require Executive Board approval.

The fiscal year runs from July 1st to June 30th. The annual GLI Financial Report will be available to GLI members after the close of the GLI fiscal year.

The GLI president and the GLI treasurer are authorized by the GLI Board to sign for expenditures approved in the annual budget, and the office manager is authorized to sign for expenditures up to $150.

Any surplus money at the end of the fiscal year will be carried forward for potential use in the budget of the next year. The use of any surplus money will be directed by the GLI Administration and Finance Committee based on budget requests submitted by April,  from the GLI Board of Directors and/or Standing Committees.
